Option 1: Personal Profile / Portfolio*

Content

Create a personal profile that highlights the animal care knowledge and skills you have. Organize your profile to demonstrate the following:

  1. Your knowledge on how to meet the needs of a dog or a cat. Consider the Five Freedoms and what you’ve learned in this course.
  2. How you would apply this knowledge to an opportunity to volunteer or work in an environment in your community that provides animal care (e.g. stable, rescue shelter, veterinary facility).

Regardless of the format you chose, each should include sections / pages dedicated to:

  1. Who you are,
  2. A list of your skills and experience,
  3. Information and examples related to dog or cat care.

Format

You may choose to create your profile / portfolio in a format such as those listed below or develop your own:

Icon of a graded podcast or audio recordingA scripted audio podcast,

Icon of a graded websiteA simple personal webpage design,

Icon of a graded paper or reportA summary ‘portfolio’ document.

Icon of a graded presentationA series of PowerPoint slides.

Option 2: “A Day in the Life” Video / Storyboard

Content

Create a two-to-five minute “day in my life” video or storyboard demonstration that highlights necessary and responsible aspects of care for your dog or cat. Use some of the materials you create in the course Activities to help you demonstrate, “show” and “tell.”

The “day in my life” should address the care required to meet your dog or cat’s needs for:

  1. Food and water
  2. Shelter
  3. Disease or illness prevention (monitoring skills)
  4. Handling (e.g. moving, or transporting)
  5. Behaviour (e.g. enrichment).

Format

You can choose to create the “day in my life” demonstration in any of the following ways:

Icon of a graded videoAs an actual narrated video in a real environment in which you may live or work, OR

Icon of a graded presentationCreate a storyboard & “script’ to demonstrate a potential animated video in comic or cartoon style. PowerPoint slides or Word document are recommended formats for this.

Option 3: Public Service Announcement

Content

Design a public service announcement (PSA) that educates others about the basic and minimum requirements for the care that domestic animals should receive in their environments.

Your PSA should start with a brief description of an issue related to animal care or welfare. You should use the issue as a starting point to help you explain why basic and minimum requirements and recommendations for animal care are established through the Codes of Practice or animal legislation.

Then, your PSA should identify and describe key strategies that protect and ensure animal well-being and consider the Five Freedoms:

  1. Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour;
  2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area;
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment;
  4. Freedom to express (most) normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind;
  5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

Format

Your public service announcement can be in one of the formats below or in a format that you design:

Icon of a graded paper or reportA brochure document,

Icon of a graded podcast or audio recordingA two-to-three minute podcast,

Icon of a graded websiteA design for a “new” webpage or Facebook page on responsible dog and cat care.
