Overview

The type of contact between people and animals has a strong influence on animal welfare. Cats and dogs can perceive a negative interaction or handling experience fearfully. When pets are fearful, their stress responses increase and their well-being is reduced. They can also behave in ways that can harm humans. 

As you explore this module keep in mind the following questions:

  1. How can we reduce stress and risks when handling cats and dogs?
  2. How do recommended guidelines compare to your own experiences with handling animals?

Module Objectives

By successfully completing this module you will:

  • Identify the behavioural signs of fear, stress, and anxiety in dogs and cats (Activity 4.1).
  • Identify the needs of dogs and cats beyond food, water, and shelter (Activity 4.2).
  • Reflect on humane handling, transport, and the behavioural needs of dogs and cats (Activity 4.3).
